I sat in my Dad’s studio alone thinking, thinking of my parents, thinking of my sisters. I didn’t know what hurt me more. My parents being hypocrites or my sister going behind my back.
I heard the stereo door open and without turning, I knew who it was. “I’m okay.”
“Are you sure?” Liz asked as she approached me.
I glanced over my shoulder at my friend and gave her a faint smile. “Yeah, I’m fine. If you’re hungry I’m sure there’s something in the pantry you can eat.”
She waved me off with a flick of her hand. “No need to worry about me. I’m worried about you.” She pulled a chair up beside me and sat down. “You still have feelings for him don’t you?”
I turned to Liz. “Who?”
She gave me a small smile. “JC.”
My eyes widen and I shook my head. “No, no. The only person I have feelings for is Jonathan.”
“Uh-hum,” Liz said, not buying it for a second.
“I do.” She just nodded. I looked at her surprised. “I do!” I practically shouted.
She put her hands up in defends. “Okay, okay, I believe you.” She chuckled softly.
JC walked into the studio without a knock, both Liz and I turned to him. He had a bright smile that stretched across his face and looked very chipper.
Liz smiled at him. “Don’t you look bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.”
I snorted holding back my laughter. Liz looked at me amused. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry. I just pictured JC with a bushy tail and holding a nut.”
"Go ahead, but you were the nut."
Liz laughed and I gave JC a look. “Ha ha, go climb a tree with your squirrel friends.”
“Don’t anger the squirrel,” said Liz, holding back her laughter “it might attack.”
“Oh right,” I snickered “it might be rabid. We don’t have our rabies shots.” I gestured for him to go away. “Shoo squirrel…we don’t have any food for you here.” I turned to Liz and saw her face turning red of laughter. I laughed and said, “Are you okay? Don’t die on me now.” I turned back to JC who was shaking his head at me laughing. “So what are doing here squirrel boy? If you’re looking for my Dad…he’s not here. I don’t know where he’s at. Alex and Amber are in the kitchen if you’re looking for them.”
He held up some papers for me to see. “I just came by to drop off some lyrics.” He walked up to me and leaned over to put the papers on the desk. I closed my eyes and inhaled his cologne. “Tell your Dad-“He stopped what he was saying and looked at me. “Adrienne?” Hearing my name, I opened my eyes to find JC giving me an odd look. “Are you okay?”
“I, uh, yeah,” I nervously said, tucking a loose strand of hair behind my ear. I glanced over at Liz who was silently laughing at me. I gave her a dirty look and turned back to watch JC walk back to the door.
“Just tell your Dad I came by to drop off some lyrics,” JC said as he was leaving.
“Okay, I will.” I turned back to Liz, she was still laughing. I slapped her knee. “Would you shut up?”
She began laughing out loud and said, “I’m sorry, I just wish you saw the look JC gave you.”
Hearing the doorbell ring I stood up, laughing softly and shaking my head to myself. I walked out of the studio and saw JC standing in the foyer, hanging up his cell phone. “I thought you left?”
“I was. I got a phone call.”
“From who?” Liz asked nosily walking into the foyer. She folded her arms over her chest and raised an eyebrow. “Girlfriend?”
I shot Liz and dirty look and reached for the doorknob to the front door and turned it, opening the door. To my surprise two police officers were standing in the doorway. “Uh…can I help you two officers?”
“Ma’am, we have received a 911 hang up call from this residence.”
I shook my head. “There’s has to be some mistake.” I glanced over my shoulder at Liz and JC. “No one here has called 911.”
“May we come in and just take a look around?”
“Uh, yeah, sure.” I step back and let the officer in.
“On callback, a female could be heard screaming.” One of the officers said as he looked into the family room.
Suddenly screaming could be heard coming from upstairs, and all of sudden Annie came running with Amber’s clothes and threw them over the balcony, and onto the foyer, and onto the two officers.
At the same time, both my parents walked in and saw the scene in front of them. “What is going on here?!” my Dad said in an angry voice.
Liz looked at Hector, she gave him a small smile. “Slumber party?”
Wanting to laugh, I held back my laughter and snorted. My parents gave me disappointing gazes and I left the room. Liz quickly followed snickering softly.
