A Heart Desire
Chapter 17

“Jonathan, please let me explain!” I said as I caught up with him in the front yard. I reached for him but he dodge me.

“I don’t want to hear it! You’ve hurt me enough already.”

“Jonathan, please!” I begged. “He kissed me!”

Jonathan shook his head not wanting to hear it. I kept trying to grab him to make him look at me, but he kept dodging around me. “Get away from me!” he yelled as he tried to make his way to his rental car parked in the driveway.

“Jonathan, please don’t do this,” I said on the verge of tears. “I didn’t mean to hurt you.”

He ignored me and caught a glimpse of JC leaving the house. He shook his head and walked up to his car and opened the door. He got inside and I grabbed the door, preventing Jonathan to close it. “Let go of the door!”

“Not until you let me explain!”

“What is there to explain?! You’ve been cheating on me! Now let go of the door!” He pulled hard on the car door and I let go.

I watched as Jonathan started the car up and begin to pull out of the driveway, but I refused to let him go without a fight. I ran after the car, screaming Jonathan’s name and letting the tears run down my cheeks freely.

Jonathan saw me and stopped his car at the end of the driveway. I stood there in front of his car just waiting and he stared back. Finally, he reached over to the passenger side door and opened it.
Quickly, I ran over to the door and got in and Jonathan drove off.

The silence between us was deafening. I just sat there not knowing what to say or do. I knew I hurt Jonathan, but I never meant to. If he only knew how much I loved him, but I couldn’t say the words. They didn’t come to me as easy as they use to.

Finally, what seemed like forever I felt the car stop. Jonathan got out and slammed the door behind him and walked off.

I looked around me and noticed we were at the beach. I got out of the car and saw Jonathan in the distance sitting in the sand, staring off into the horizon. I walked up to him and sat down.

There was a moment of silence, except for the waves that washed ashore and the wind that seemed to pick up as the sun set.

I shivered slightly and hugged myself from the sudden cold. Jonathan glanced at me. “Cold?”

“Just a little.”

Without giving it a second thought, Jonathan took off his light jacket and put it over my shoulders. “Better?”

I gave him smile. “Yes, thank you.”

Jonathan just nodded and turned away. Another moment of silence settled between us. Finally, he then spoke. “Why, Adrienne?”

I turned to Jonathan. “Jonathan, he kissed me.”

He looked at me. “You keep saying that, but let me ask you this…did you want him to kiss you?”

“No, I want it back.” JC looked at me. His face serious. “Now.” I looked at him questionably. He cracked a smile and I hit him playfully on the shoulder. His responded by grabbing my hand and pulling me closer to him.

I knew what came next. He kissed me, I kissed him back. Then I’ll take a step back and he’ll look at me with those amazing beautiful blue eyes, I remember. As much as it hurt me, as much as I wanted to let him kiss me I couldn’t, but I didn’t protest. This was something I had secretly wanted since I had run into JC at my sisters party.

I stared into Jonathan’s blue eyes and bit back my tears. “Yes, but it’s not what you think.”

“It’s not what I think?!” He laughed sarcastically. “What am I suppose to think then? You wanted him to kiss you. So he kissed you.”

“Jonathan I made a mistake…I was wrong. Please can we just talk about this?”

“There’s nothing to talk about.”

Tears began running down my cheeks. “I said I was sorry, Jonathan. Why can’t you accept my apology?”

He stood up and looked down at me. “Sometimes sorry just doesn’t cut it. I loved you, Adrienne and you betrayed me. I can’t be with someone who cheated on me because in the back of my mind I’ll always be wondering will she do it again.”

“But it was just a kiss, nothing more.”

“Was it just a kiss or was it something more?”

I looked up at Jonathan. I couldn’t answer the question because honestly I didn’t know, or did I?

Jonathan placed a gentle kiss on my forehead and caressed my cheek. “Goodbye, Adrienne.”

I got up quickly and ran after him, yet again. "Wait no." I grabbed him, and he turned to me, and I kissed him.
