Liz shook her head in frustration and sat back into her seat. A moment later, she leaned forward and rested her elbows on the table. Her food had just arrived but she could not eat at a time like this.
I on the other hand just sat at the table drinking my water and eating my lunch like nothing had ever happened.
Unable to take it anymore, Liz banged her fist against the table, making the plates and glasses jump. “Adrienne, I can’t take this anymore. Scream, shout, cry, do something. I know you must be hurting right now.”
“I can’t,” I said, picking at my food with my fork.
“Why not?”
I looked up at Liz. “Why should I cry over JC when he’s never shed a tear over me? He’s with Ashley now. Let her cry for him. The person I should be crying for is Jonathan. This has been the longest time we’ve been apart.”
“Well, why aren’t you?”
“Why aren’t I what?”
“Crying?”
I shrugged. “I don’t know.”
“Do you miss Jonathan?”
“Yes, no, I don’t know.” I sighed heavily. “When I left home I thought I never love anyone as much as I loved JC, but then I met Jonathan. He made me forget about him, but then I came back home and all those feeling I had for JC came rushing back. It’s like I never got over him.”
“Maybe you haven’t. Maybe you still love him.”
I shook my head hard. “No, I can’t. I love Jonathan.”
“Perhaps you do love him, but maybe there’s something in you telling you he’s not the right person for you.”
I shook my head again and shrugged my shoulders. “I don’t know.”
“Hi ladies, sorry I’m late.” Justin walked up to the table and sat down. He looked at me and gave me a sympathetic smile. “I heard what happened. How are you holding up?”
I shook my head slightly and smiled to myself. I looked at Liz. “What happened to keeping secrets?”
She laughed softly. “Well…this is different. I promise you, though Justin is the only one I told.”
Justin nodded and said, “I’ll kick JC’s ass for you if you want.”
I laughed. “No, that’s okay.”
“You sure?”
“He hasn’t done anything wrong.”
“Adrienne, he kissed you last night and now he’s having sex with
your sister.”
“So…really the person you should be beating is me. I cheated with my sister’s boyfriend.”
Liz looked at Justin. “She has a point. But hold up now…we’re not giving JC a chance. We have to give him the benefit of a doubt. Did we see JC having sex with your sister? No.”
I gave her a look and said, “No, I didn’t see them having SEX, but JC is a guy and Ashley is a girl and beautiful girl. A guy would be crazy not to want to have sex with her, especially when she’s offering it.”
Justin snorted. “Crazy wouldn’t even describe the word.”
“See!” I said. “Justin agrees!”
Liz swung and hit Justin in the arm. “Justin is an idiot.” She gave him a dirty look. “You’re not helping,” She mouthed through clenched teeth. Justin pressed his lips tightly together and looked down in shame.
“I think I’m going home tomorrow.”
Both Liz and Justin shouted, “No!”
I looked at them strangely, and Liz said, “We can’t leave. Not yet.”
I looked between Liz and Justin. I smiled and tossed my napkin onto the table. “Fine, we can stay, but we’re leaving Friday.”
Liz nodded. “Okay.” She smiled at Justin.
