“Adrienne,” Liz said, poking her head into my room. Opening the door wider and stepping inside, she looked around. Hearing the shower turn off and seeing steam coming from the bathroom, she walked over to the door and knocked. “Hey Adrienne girl, how are you feeling?”
“Better,” I said from inside the bathroom.
“Good.” Liz leaned her back against the door and looked at her
nails. “Listen, I was wondering if you, um, wanted to do something tonight.”
“Eh, not tonight, Liz. I’m still pretty tired from last night.”
Liz made a disappointed face. “How tired are you really?”
The bathroom door opened and Liz stumbled back, losing her balance. I looked at her and laughed. “Why Liz?”
She looked at me with a smile. “Justin is having a party at his house tonight and he has invited me, well us.”
“No way,” I said, wrapping my hair up in a towel and walking to my bed.
“Aw, come on, Adrienne. It’s not everyday we get invited to a party.” I gave Liz a look. “Okay, I take that back. It’s not everyday we get invited to a party given by Justin Timberlake.” She walked up to me and took my hand. “Please please please, Adrienne, come with me. I will never ask for another favor from you again.”
I snatched my hand back. “Can’t you go by yourself?”
“I won’t know anybody.”
“You will know Justin.”
“Yeah, but his friends will be there and he’ll be talking to them. I want somebody there I can talk to.”
“If I go, you will disappear with Justin, never to be found again and I’ll be left alone.”
“I won’t do that to you.” Liz made a face to herself. “Again.” I shook my head laughing to myself. “Look at it this way…if I had not left you alone at Julia’s party you would have never met Jonathan.”
“The answer is still no, Liz.”
“UGH! You are such a party pooper. I wanted to go have some fun tonight and you go and spoil it.”
“Hey, I’m not stopping you from going to this party. You go, you go have fun, just count me out of it.”
“Count you out of what?” My Mom asked as she walked into the room carrying basket full clean towels.
“Oh nothing, Mrs. Mendez,” said Liz, crossing her arms over her chest. “It’s just Justin invited me and Adrienne to a party he’s having at his house tonight and Adrienne doesn’t want to go.”
“Justin?” Rose repeated, putting away the clean towels in the bathroom.
Liz nodded. “Justin Timberlake.”
She smiled. “Oh Adrienne, you should go.” Rose walked out of the bathroom and stood in the middle of the room, looking at me. “You’ll have fun.”
I rolled my eyes. “Mom, please.”
“Fine, fine, but if one of you girls decided to go, make sure the other goes too. I don’t want you girls going off by yourselves. Pretty little things like you; you’ll get snatched up quick by some perve,” Rose said, over her shoulder as she left the room.
Both Liz and I looked at each other and laughed. Liz then playfully hit me and said, “You see? Now you have to go. A perve will snatch me up if I go alone.”
I couldn’t help but laugh. “Yeah, a perve named Justin.”
She smiled. “Yeah, well, I can handle him.” I just shook my head smiling. “Come on Adrienne, come to the party.”
I sighed, thinking about it. “Okay.”
“Yay!” Liz pulled me into a quick hug, and then ran over to my sister’s closet and began searching through it.
“Liz, what are you doing?” I asked confused.
“You don’t think your sisters would mind if I borrow something for tonight would they?”
“Uh…no. Go right ahead.”
“Thanks!”
“Oh cool shirt!” Liz said holding up white shirt with red and black writing on it.
I looked up. “That’s JC’s shirt.” I over to Liz and took the shirt. “JC was in here looking for this shirt yesterday. When he didn’t find it we figured Ashley took it with her to Europe.”
“Oh. Well, it’s a cool shirt. I wouldn’t blame her if she did. Can I have it?”
I glanced at Liz. “No.”
She just shrugged and turned back to the closet. A pair of jeans caught her eye, she picked them out and held them up. “This would look great with that shirt. You should wear this outfit tonight.”
“Are you crazy?” I said. “This is JC shirt.”
“So?”
“So I can’t wear it.”
“Who is stopping you? Wear the damn shirt.” She tossed me the jeans. “The jeans too. “
A knock at the door and thinking it was one of my sisters, I told them to come in.
“Adrienne?”
Hearing JC’s voice, I looked at Liz. Quickly, I gave her JC’s shirt and she tossed it behind her and I turned around. “Hi,” I said with a nervous smile.
He smiled back. “I just came up to see how you were doing.”
“I’m-” My head jerked back suddenly, hitting the wall. I whipped my head around and gave Liz a dirty look and she mouthed “Sorry” while holding the towel she pulled from my head. I turned back to JC. “I’m fine.”
He laughed softly. “That’s good. Well, um, I better go.”
I just smiled. “Okay, bye.”
“Bye.” JC turned to leave, but stopped short. “Justin is having a party tonight-”
Liz spoke up with a smile. “We know. We’re going.”
“Oh really?” JC looked at me. He smiled. “Me too. I’ll see you there.” I just smiled and nodded and watched JC leave the room.
Liz pushed me hard from behind and giggled. “Girl!”
