A Heart Desire
Chapter 1

“I’m home!” Liz called out, entering her apartment that we shared.

“I’m in the bedroom!” I called back.

Shutting the door behind her, Liz walked to the end of the hallway to my room and stood in the doorway with her arms crossed in front of her. “So you decided to go to your sisters sweet sixteen after all?”

I chuckled softly and glanced back at Liz. “Yeah.”

Liz nodded her head and walked over to my bed as I packed. “Good.” She sat down. “What made you change your mind?”

I gave Liz a slight smile. “Jonathan talked me into it.” I turned back to packing. “The party is tonight so I’ll be back tomorrow.”

“You’re just staying for the night? Adrienne, come on, you haven’t been home in 3 ½ years. I’m sure your family misses you. Stay a week, or a couple of weeks.”

“Um…I don’t know. I left home in not-so-good a mood with my Dad.”

“All more reason you should stay awhile.”

I gave her a hesitant look as I thought about it. “Yeah, I guess I could stay week. Visit with my Mom and my sisters.”

“That’s the sprit!” she shouted like a cheer leader.

I just laughed at her and asked, “What are you going to do while I’m gone?”

She sighed dramatically and fell back onto my bed. “I don’t know. I guess I can watch the home shopping channel, or…” She cocked her head to the side and looked at me, a sad smile creeping across her lips.

I laughed and shook my head at my friend. “Do you want to come with me?”

Liz jumped up. “I thought you never ask! I mean, I guess. I guess can go meet your BORING family.”

“Ha ha. Go hurry up and pack while I call the airline and book another ticket.” Liz cheerfully ran out of my room and I sat down and called the airline. The whole time in the back of my mind, I was thinking the real reason why I didn’t want to go home.

I chuckled softly to myself and left the family room, running into JC in the foyer. I put my hands on my hips. “Calling it a day?”

He smiled. “Yeah I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Okay.” I smiled and turned to leave, but JC grabbed my hand. I turned back to him.

“Aren’t you going to walk me out?”

“Silly me. Where are my manners?” I gave him a smile and JC opened the front door and we walked out together. I leaned my back against the door. “I’ll call you tomorrow when I’m at school.” He nodded, smiling at me, his eyes looking directly into mine. I smiled shyly and broke the eye contact glancing downwards and to the side. “You should go. I don’t want to get caught.” I looked back at JC.

He just nodded, his eyes never left me. He leaned in and kissed me, gently at first, then with more passion as his wrapped his arms around my waist pulling me closer to him. I felt my body relax against him as I ran my hands up his chest and around his neck.

“Adrienne!”

I snapped out of my thoughts and turned my head to look at Liz and realized she was looking at me rather funny. “Uh, yeah?” I asked.

Liz put her hands on her hips and said, “I’ve been calling your name for almost five minutes.”

“Hmm, sorry I’ve must have been daydreaming.”

“Right, well I’m heading out to pick up some things. Do you want me to pick you up anything while I’m out?”

“No, I’m good. Be sure to be back by 10. We have to be at the airport by 12.”

Liz nodded and turned to leave, but stopped short and turned back to me, a concerned look on her face. “Adrienne, are you okay? You’ve been acting strange ever since you got your sisters invitation.”

I gave Liz a reassuring smile. “I’m fine.”

“I don’t believe you, but okay. I’ll be back in a few minutes.” I nodded and turned to finish packing. Liz left the room and walked to the front door to leave just as Jonathan walked in. Liz smiled at him. “Adrienne is in her room,” she told him as she walked out.

Jonathan closed the door behind Liz and called out my name to tell me he was here. He walked to the kitchen and picked up a bag of chips and walked to my room. “When does your flight leave?” he asked me as he sat down on my bed, watching me zip up my suitcase.

“One ‘o clock.” I turned to Jonathan. “I’ve decided to stay a week instead of a night.”

“Good.”

I sighed, pushing my hair back as it got in my eyes. “Yeah, and Liz is coming with me.”

“Okay,” he said with smile.

“Can you keep an eye on our apartment while were gone?”

“You know I will.” He reached out his hand and took mine. He pulled me into his lap. “I’ll miss you.”

I smiled, wrapping my arms around his neck. “I’ll miss you too.” I gave him a kiss and he kissed back. “I’ll call you every night.”

“I know you will.” We stood up. “Just go and have fun. I’ll be here when you get back.” He gave me a quick kiss on the cheek and picked up the bag of chips he brought in with him. “Can I have these?”

I laughed. Since I’ve known Jonathan, he had always stole food from me and Liz. “I guess and you mind as well take home the left over pizza from last night in the fridge. Liz and I won’t be home to eat it.”

“Sounds good to me.” He left the room and I followed him out. “Do you need me to take you and Liz to the airport?” Jonathan asked over his shoulder as he disappeared into the kitchen.

“Yeah, could you?” I sat down in the living room. “I don’t want to leave my car at the airport.”

“Sure. Just tell me when you want to leave.” Jonathan walked out of the kitchen, arms fills with goodies from the pantry.

I shook my head at Jonathan and laughed. “Jonathan.”

He looked at me innocently. “What?”
