All I Want for Christmas Is You
Chapter Ten: Hot Potato
Veronica and I walked living room and plopped down onto the couch. It had been a very long, busy day at the restaurant, and we were exhausted. Veronica turned her head to me. “It’s been five days. Have you called him?”
I made a face and I turned to Veronica. “Called who?”
“JC.”
“Oh, him? No. I lost his number.”
“If I wasn’t so dog-tired right now I would slap you.” She lifted her hand. “Here. Hit your face against my hand.” I laughed tiredly. “Amanda, how could you lose his number?”
“I didn’t do it on purpose.”
“Yeah, right. I bet you threw it away.”
“No. I distinctively remember folding the piece of paper and sticking it into my pillow case for safe keeping.”
“Pillow case, huh?” She chuckled softly.
“Shut up.”
“Do you have any brothers or sisters?”
Me and Veronica turned around hearing Emily and saw her on the phone. We gave each other odd looks, and I said, “Emily sweetie, who are you talking to?” She looked at me and ran off with the phone.
Veronica laughed and turned around in seat. “Maybe she’s talking to her BOYFRIEND. Maybe she should give you some pointers.”
“Shut up.” I said laughing. “Speaking of boyfriends, what’s up with you and Justin? He calls here every night.”
“So?”
“Sooo…what’s up with you two? You guys have gone out on three dates in the past five days and he calls you every night. I might be totally off, but it looks like a relationship may be forming.”
“Maybe.” Veronica smiled to herself. “Since you and I have tomorrow off, Justin and I going to spend the whole day out. Do you want to come?”
“And be the third wheel? No thanks.”
“Well I was thinking you could call JC.”
“Did you forget? I lost his number.”
“Again with your lame excuses.” Veronica turned her body around and looked into the foyer. She saw Emily sitting on the bottom step of the stairs talking on the phone. She rolled her eyes. “Who is that girl talking to?”
I turned and looked. “I don’t know, but she’s been talking on that phone all week.”
“I know. Yesterday I had to chase her around the house because I was expecting Justin’s call and she wouldn’t get off the phone.”
I glanced over my shoulder at Veronica. “We should really invest in our own phone.”
She nodded and looked back at Emily. “Emily, I need the phone.”
“Can’t you see I’m on it?!”
I snickered. “Little Miss Attitude.”
“That little-” Veronica stood up and walked over to Emily. She held out her hand. “Give me the phone.” Emily looked up at her, and ran away. Veronica was hot on her heels.
Laughing, I turned myself around and stared at the blank TV screen. I could hear Emily’s screaming and Veronica shouting throughout the house, but I ignored it until it went silent. I turned around and saw Veronica walk back into the living room with the cordless phone in hand. I laughed out loud. “Where’s Emily?”
“Upstairs, locked in the hall closet.” She laughed and plopped down on the couch.
“Did you find out who she was talking to?”
“No I didn’t ask.” She looked at the phone. It was still in talk mode and the number Emily dialed was on the small screen. “This number looks familiar.”
I looked at it and nodded. “Yeah it does. Did they hang up?” I took the phone from Veronica and put it to my ear. “Helloooo?” I said acting silly. Veronica laughed.
“Now that wasn’t very nice. Locking Emily in the closet,” said JC with amusement in his voice.
My eyes widened. “Oh shit!” I tossed the phone to Veronica. “It’s JC!”
She laughed. “What?”
“JC!” I mouthed. “He’s on the phone.”
“Oh my God!” Veronica mouthed. She laughed and tossed me back the phone. “Talk to him.” I shook my head hard and tossed her back the phone. Veronica gave me a look and tossed it back. The phone went back forth a couple more times before I finally got it and hung up. “AMANDA!”
I looked at Veronica shocked. “Oh my God I just hung up on JC.”
“He’s never going to go out with you now. Call him back.”
“No way.” The phone started to ring in my hands and I looked down at it. “It’s Justin.” I looked at Veronica and gave her the phone.
